Love it or hate it, Dark Tidings’ polarizing nature has been the source of many entertaining KeyForge discussions, entering the zeitgeist of Crucible culture.

Our goal has always been to support and reward organized play. In our first year, this has primarily been on the “post-event” side of things. Event organizers would promote their event somewhere else and conduct their tournament somewhere else (such as with tournament bracket software, including Sloppy Labwork’s own Sloppy Tournaments).

Once that event concluded, that’s when KeyChain entered the picture. EOs would create the event on KeyChain, and would input the results. Players would then be able to view the event’s results, and earn progression and awards from it.

What we’d like to address now, is our effort to now try to bring KeyChain to the “pre-event” side of things too.

Creating Upcoming Events

Upcoming events in KeyChain are quite similar to completed events, in that they undergo the same process to be created. The only difference is that you would set the date to a date in the future, and you would leave the Player Count at its default of 0 players.

What EOs are able to do now, is tick a new box titled Accept Registrations. When this toggle is set, it allows players to self-register for an event using a nice shiny REGISTER button. This can help give EOs a heads-up as to how many players they expect to have in their tournament.

EOs can share their event link on KeyChain however they like, which will allow any players with a KeyChain account to register. Plus, a new Description field lets EOs put in any pertinent information for prospective attendees, such as info about the timing, structure, format, pricing, and more.

Playgroup members can see the list of users who have registered in the event, whereas non-members will only see a tally of how many other players have registered for the event.

Launch Into Sloppy Tournaments

Many playgroup EOs may already be familiar with Sloppy Tournaments' tight integration with KeyChain, and how after completing an event in Sloppy Tournaments, you can export directly to an event on KeyChain.

Also starting today, EOs will now be able to take an upcoming event in KeyChain and kick-off a tournament in Sloppy Tournaments using the [Start A Tournament] button once they are ready to start. This will prepare a tournament with all of the registered players. EOs will still be able to add/remove players. as well as adjust tournament settings. in Sloppy Tournaments after the export. (After clicking [Start A Tournament], any changes to players should be made in the tournament bracket in Sloppy Tournaments rather than in the KeyChain event.)

After the tournament is completed, the tournament creator will be able to export the tournament results back to its associated KeyChain event, making the entire roundtrip process seamless.

On a related note, any events in KeyChain which have had results imported from Sloppy Tournaments will now show a link to “View Tournament” from within KeyChain, so players can easily navigate to the complete tournament bracket in Sloppy Tournaments.

Where We’re Heading

Our vision with posting upcoming events to KeyChain is to tap into KeyChain’s potential as a playgroup and event finder for the KeyForge community.

One way we intend to do this is through an interactive map of game stores, including one that can be filtered by stores who have upcoming events, as well as stores who have run events of previous formats in the past.

There are other ways too we intend to display upcoming events to players as well that also will be able to include playgroups without a physical location, such as upcoming events lists and/or calendars. We’ll have more information on that soon.

EOs of Game Store playgroups can start preparing for this feature by adding a venue with a physical address to their playgroup. EOs can click [Manage Playgroup] from their playgroup home page, and scroll down to Venues to add a venue.

We hope this suite of features is something both event organizers and event seekers will be excited about, making KeyChain a centralized destination for players to find groups and stores near them, as well as what events are upcoming.

Next week, KeyChain celebrates its one year anniversary since its beta launch on March 31, 2025. We wanted to use this moment to take a look back at KeyChain’s origin story. Plus, we have a few things to tease at the end of this post!

Project Might Club

In December 2024, the first spark of what would eventually become KeyChain was born on the Sloppy Labwork Discord server. KeyChain is a Sloppy Labwork site, which is full of other beloved gizmos such as Sloppy Tourneys, Random Access Archives, and pick and ban tools for various formats. Project Might Club was the designated codename given to a new exploratory gizmo idea: bringing leaderboards, rankings, achievements, and other player progression tracking to KeyForge.

Some of this had been tried before. Dead-Sync from the KeyChain team had previously done rudimentary versions of this in Google Sheets for his game store at the time, parts of which were inspired from discussions with Lokekar and his spreadsheet system with Pink Bunny Games.

However, the goal was to expand that with a robust web app: How could players have a portal consisting of multiple play communities and tie it all into a central profile? These are some of the (purposely very rough) sketches to get some ideas flowing.

Another Flowchart?

Before the site could be built, the team first needed to figure out how everything was connected. What is a playgroup? How do events connect with stats, profiles, and awards? How do leaderboards get updated? These questions led to more questions and several flowcharts, with flowcharts leading to spreadsheets (and… you guessed it… more spreadsheets).

Shiny Things

Even though the site was not yet built, we knew we wanted some sort of achievement system to give people shiny digital trinkets for players to collect and add to their own personal digital award shelf. One of the first things to come together were the idea of the tiered achievements:

Around the same time, we were also ready to start exploring “the brand” of Project Might Club. What would the site be called? How would it look? In something that rarely ever happens in design, we went with the very first idea proposed: KeyChain, along with its associated tagline: “Unlock your KeyForge organized play”.

Building the Site

For those who don’t already know, KeyChain’s resident development wizard is the wand-waver for turning ideas into reality. He makes the magic possible. KeyChain did need to be a functional site, after all!

The KeyChain team would like to give a shoutout to their local play communities, who were part of a very small number of users to help kick the tires on early alpha builds of KeyChain as we continued to refine the site, add playercards, and prepare for upcoming features across February and March of last year.

The Rest is History

That brings us to exactly one year ago, where KeyChain launched a closed beta on March 31, 2025. Announced in Bad Penny Press, the KeyForge subreddit, and many other places on Discord, we invited organizers and leaders of game store playgroups to apply to join. We accomplished a lot with the beta thanks to your help, and in October, shipped into general release, opening up the platform to both online play as well as non-LGS playgroups (which we call Organizations) for organized play such as leagues or community-organized regional tournaments,

Pop the Champaign

As a thank you to everyone who has supported KeyChain in any capacity over the past year, we have a few surprises for you! For one, on our one year anniversary on Tuesday we’re releasing a Charm Drop with a few small playercard items to celebrate the occasion.

Tomorrow, before that though, we’ll be sharing with you something you may find particularly useful for your own organized play — for both players and event organizers alike. Stay tuned! — and thank you for supporting KeyChain this past year!

The KeyChain team is happy to announce we have completed our process of retroactively awarding champion trophies for premier tournaments conducted under Ghost Galaxy prior to KeyChain’s launch in 2025. As an important note: the only items being awarded for these events are the champion (first place) trophies. Other trophies, stats, XP, or RP, are not included.

Included Events

Effective immediately for players with KeyChain accounts, champions of the following tournaments should now see their trophy total increased for those events:

• 2023 or 2024 World Championships

• 2023 or 2024 KeyForge Celebration Opens

• 2023 or 2024* National Championships

• 2023 or 2024 Vault Tours

• 2022 KeyForge Celebration Tournaments (the KeyChain team has decided to recognize and award these as KeyForge Celebration Opens)

Winners of 2025 Premiere Tournaments (and beyond) should continue to see their awards from these events, assuming that event is in KeyChain as a result of the complete tournament data for that event being made public or having been submitted to us. If you do not see a 2025 premier tournament posted in KeyChain and wish to see it included, please reach out to that event’s organizer and refer them to the KeyChain discord server and have them contact an admin.

*As of the time of this post, we’re still continuing to collect missing data from the 2024 National Championship season, which has not widely had results collected or centralized in one place. We will issue these awards as results come in. If you’re interested in helping us crowdsource this info, please visit this post on our Discord server.

Don’t See Your Trophy?

If you don’t see retroactive awards that you expected to have assigned to you, this is likely because your KeyChain username did not closely enough match the username on sources of record (such as Archon Arcana) for these events. If this is the case, please contact us on Discord or fill out this results request form to request a manual update.

Additionally, now that we’ve completed our retroactive pass for 2022–2024, we will not again actively search to issue awards from those events to players who have joined KeyChain from this point on. Players who do join KeyChain after this moment and wish to claim any trophies must fill out the results request form to request a manual update.

Note on Store Championships

One final note of a more local nature: Winners of 2024 and 2025 Store Championships may also be entitled to retroactive assignment of Store Champion trophies. These are being handled by each store’s event organizer. If you would like to have a Store Championship trophy awarded from these years, please contact your playgroup’s event organizer. They will be able to initiate this process with the KeyChain admin team.

The first season on KeyChain is in the books, and Charm Drop 4 comes along with it, including a trio of trophy sets dedicated to leaderboard competition both at the global and in-playgroup levels.

The Story So Far…

Over the past six months, we’ve seen more and more players and LGS playgroups join the KeyChain beta. What started as a humble effort in April has — through your enthusiasm and support — turned into a growing community joining in our efforts to “supplement and enhance KeyForge organized play”. We couldn’t do it without your willingness to participate and spread the word. Thank you.

Now, the day has come: KeyChain is leveling up and has left beta!

In the beta over the past six months and thanks to your valuable feedback, we’ve:

• Added support for more login options

• Added Awards

• Introduced two Charm Drops for more cosmetic options

• Optimized KeyChain for mobile

• Added support for deck linking to event results

• Spotlighted several top performing players each month

• Premier Tournament results

We limited the KeyChain beta to LGS-based playgroups that ran in-person events. We did this on purpose to ensure we had focused feedback with one particular slice of organized play. However, it has always been our intent to expand our scope to encompass more OP. As our scope expands, we feel it’s important KeyChain’s ecosystem also grows accordingly to account for that, and we’re happy to share details about that today.

Playgroup Signup for LGSes and Organizations

Playgroups are the keys on your KeyChain which unlock the doors of organized play. Until now, players could only register their Game Store playgroups, but starting today, they can now register Organization playgroups as well. The latter are organized play groups that are not directly associated with a game store (even if they host events at a game store). These organizations can host either in-person or online events (more on that below!).

This opens up KeyChain to be used by playgroups such as regional event organizers, leagues, and more. Both LGS and Organization playgroups will have the same feature set, but the distinction may allow for better playgroup discovery and filtering in the future.

These sign-ups will be handled through a new Playgroup Application form, which will also be made available on the KeyChain site itself in the near future. This form should be filled out by the primary organizer or leader of the playgroup, or someone who has the permission from that person to do so.

Each submission will undergo a review process to ensure that the playgroup provides publicly visible KeyForge organized play that is by and large accessible to the broader KeyForge community.

For playgroups that are a bit more private in nature, such as a group of friends meeting to play at somebody’s house, it’s our plan to support those playgroups too at a later date. Stay tuned!

Online Play (Event Modes)

We know that a lot of KeyForge OP is conducted online. It’s not just leagues either, as even some game store organizers conduct events online too. We want KeyChain to be able to serve these OP experiences too, so we’re introducing support for online play with the new Event Mode setting.

When playgroup EOs submit an event, they will pick between In-Person or Online as the event mode. EOs can even set a default mode in their playgroup’s settings to make future event submission easier! (How convenient!)

We do want to set expectations a little bit with online play. While KeyChain is here to support all forms of play, it was also built with the goal of supporting in-person play and to help in-person communities grow and thrive. We want to support online play too, but simultaneously wish to do so without compromising the in-person OP ecosystem. With that in mind, online events have the following progression adjustments:

• XP earned from Online Tournaments is reduced by approximately 50% (12 XP for attendance, 5 XP for match win, 2 XP for match loss). There is no XP earned for Online Open Play.

• Progression towards unlocking awards will be possible through online events, although some specific awards may still be limited to in-person events only.

• Stats tracking and RP / leaderboard progression will be supported with online play, with RP contributing towards both the global leaderboard as well as intra-playgroup leaderboards.

UPDATE 10/21: We’ve updated the behavior for award progression (2nd bullet). The text above represents the latest information.

XP & RP Caps

By adding support for more playgroup and events, we expect (and are hoping for!) seeing more KeyForge play reported on KeyChain! Increased volume does however come with a risk of breaking down our progression or leaderboard ecosystems, especially as disparity between play opportunities can begin to become more visible based on people’s personal play environments.

To try to keep things balanced while simultaneously still rewarding increased play, we are instituting two separate systems for XP and RP caps.

For XP:

• On a per event basis: earned XP will be capped at 100 XP for all events.

• This has already gone into effect.

For RP & Leaderboards:

• If a user participates in more than 5 events which contribute RP to the global leaderboards in a month, the top 5 RP-earning events that month will be summed for the month period on the global leaderboard for that user.

• Annual and All-Time periods on the global leaderboard will be calculated by adding users’ RP values across the summed monthly periods (top 5 RP events).

• Internal playgroup leaderboards will not be affected by this change, and will still sum all RP values for all events held by that playgroup.

• This will go into effect at the start of the 2025-2026 season, starting December 2025.

Increased volume of play (more events) still means increased XP, stats, and awards. It still helps for leaderboards too, as it provides you with more opportunities to get a better score for the leaderboard.

Premier Tournaments

As we’ve already shared, Premier Tournament results began populating in KeyChain as of October 6th. These will continue to roll out as events are completed and data is made available. Premier Tournaments:

• Use the same XP model as standard Tournaments (25 XP for attendance, 10 XP for match win, 5 XP for match loss — with a 100 XP cap)

• Earn progression towards stats and unlocking awards (including some special awards unique to premier events).

• Earn RP, but only contribute to the Premier Tournament leaderboards (they do not contribute to the global leaderboards).

Beta-Forged

Just because we’re leaving the beta, doesn’t mean our work here is done. We plan on continuing to add new features and new charm drops to give you even more options. The Premier Tournament global playgroup is now visible to all users on KeyChain! To kick the tires, we’ve submitted results for the first two Vault Tours of the 2025 season: Rochester and Roseville.

If you linked your Master Vault account to your KeyChain account: You should see your results from either of these tournaments if you attended them, and have earned stats and XP from them. Please note that the premier leaderboards and any awards earned from these events may take up to 24 hours to populate on your account.

IF YOU DON’T SEE YOUR RESULTS: It means you likely did not link your Master Vault account to your KeyChain account. If you wish to have your premier results included:

1. Create a KeyChain account (if you haven’t already!)

2. Visit your KeyChain account settings and link your Master Vault account.

We’ll be pausing adding new premier events for a couple of days to allow more people to link their Master Vault accounts before we proceed, and will re-scan for any accounts that newly link their Master Vault in the next day or so to update both Rochester and Roseville.

However, if you link your Master Vault beyond then, your KeyChain account will NOT automatically refresh to include all previously posted tournament results. You will need to submit a results request form to have these events updated with your results.

Remember, you only need to link your Master Vault account once! That will allow you to have your premier tournament results automatically included in the future as new event results become available.

As we announced previously, KeyChain will be supporting premier tournament results in KeyChain. We’re happy to say: “that day has nearly arrived!” and we have plenty of details to share!

ATTENTION: Action Required!

If you attended or are attending a Vault Tour, National Championship, or KeyForge Celebration this year, and would like to have your results included and linked to your account on KeyChain: There is something you will need to do within the next two weeks, prior to when we publish the first patch of premier tournament results.

1. Create a KeyChain account (if you haven’t already!)

2. Visit your KeyChain profile and link your Master Vault account.

To link your Master Vault account, you will be asked to scan the QR code on your Master Vault profile. This is most easily done using two devices, such as logging into Master Vault on a computer, and logging into KeyChain on your phone and scanning the QR with your phone’s camera. If you don’t have two devices, you could recruit a trusted friend to help!

Our hope is that most players who attended premier tournaments and wish to claim their results do so prior to us uploading our first batch of results. While it will still be possible to claim results later, doing so will require extra time to submit a results request. So the more that complete these two steps above, the better!

Having your results claimed means you’ll be able to track your results, earn XP, unlock awards, and more from attending these events, similarly to how LGS-based KeyChain events work! You’ll be able to compete in leaderboards as well, but premier events will have dedicated leaderboard competition, partitioned from LGS tournaments.

Premier Tournaments Launch Date

Our initial batch of Premier Tournament results will start being published to KeyChain as early as October, 6, 2025. Starting then, all KeyChain users will see a new entry in their My Playgroups list in the form of a global playgroup called Premier Tournaments, and event results will start populating as early as that date.

This global playgroup is similar to standard LGS playgroups, but there is no member list as all KeyChain users can view the playgroup. Managed by the KeyChain admin team, there will be an event list, displaying all premier tournaments KeyChain has results for, as well as premier tournament specific leaderboards (as mentioned above, RP from premier tournaments does not contribute to the global LGS leaderboards.)

The global playgroup will also be the home of some additional information, such as a way to request a review if your results are missing or believe a correction needs to be made, as well as some information as to how we process premier tournament results.

At the time of this post, based off of the data we’ve been able to collect so far, our initial batch of premier tournament results will include:

• 2025 Vault Tour Rochester

• 2025 Vault Tour Roseville

• 2025 Vault Tour Portland

• 2025 Vault Tour Baltimore

• 2025 Vault Tour Paris

• 2025 Vault Tour Vietnam

• (We also expect to be able to include other 2025 Vault Tours, 2025 World Championships, and the 2025 KFC Open Tournaments later this year.)

And we’ll continue to work to connect with additional premier EOs to add more events, including other Vault Tours and National Championships (read below if you’re premier EO!).

For Premier Event Organizers

If you’re the official event organizer of a Vault Tour or National Championship event, we’d love to include your event results into KeyChain (and we think your participants would love this as well!).

If you are a premier event organizer, please join the KeyChain discord server and reach out to an admin there.

Did you know!? KeyChain supports deck info in event results! — and since that’s now a thing — Charm Drop 2 is all about integrating house and set tracking, notably adding the house mastery achievements! Be sure to report the decks you use in event you attend to ensure you earn progress towards these house and set based achievements!

Additionally, we’re introducing our first themed avatar set: the Bad Chemistry set, featuring a scientific spin on the houses of the Crucible. You begin with your first periodic table element right away at Level 1, and continue to unlock more each level until Level 16. There’s even a corresponding playercard background!

Lastly, we’ve added some items for Crucible Clash, Certain Darkness, and additional house-specific card backgrounds. Check out the full list of additions included in Charm Drop 2 below. We hope you enjoy the new goodies!
